When training a dog, it is best to make training a game.
The more fun the dog has during training, the more eager the dog will be to please the trainer. The Ivan Balabanov method makes training a game for the dog. The more fun you can make the training the quicker the dog will learn. For instance, if you take a ball on a rope and engage your dog into a game of fetch. During the game you can incorporate leading into the game to teach your dog to heel off leash. The main thing that is important is to stay consistent, in all you do. If you are not consistent, you will only confuse your dog.
Here are videos with me working with my white GSD using a ball on a rope:

Repetition and consistency are key in training your dog. I have heard from a dog trainer that 30 times makes an activity a habit and 90 times makes the activity a life style change.
Personally I try to work my dogs almost every day. The more time you spend working your dogs the more responsive your dog will be. Also training your dog will help the dog from getting into habits such as jumping on people and not coming when called. You should strive to keep your dogs full attention while you have it out. I don not have my dog on a leash, and that is because I have property outside of the city. So when you have your dog out you should always obey the leash laws where applicable.
One last note, the ball on the rope is only one tool to train a dog. Other tools include food drive, prey drive, and electronic collars. One thing to remember about electronic collars, they are not to be used to scare a dog into submission. If you think that is the way to train your dog, then you will hurt your relationship with your dog. At that point you will start to have behavior issues with your dog. So that being said only use the nick and constant as a last resort. You should only need the pager mode when the electronic collar is used correctly.
